Sixteen

Diana and I met the rest of our party in the front row of the arena for Ares’ fight against Hephaestus. The arena was built in the famed ancient Greek style—columns, open air, and everything was made of white marble and stone. I didn’t have a background in architecture, but I still appreciated its beauty.

The outcome of this fight would determine whether Ares’ exile would be lifted, thus whether or not we could have the Greek gods as allies. Although Zeus didn’t link the two together, if Ares was forced to leave, I knew Diana would insist we all do as well. No pressure or anything, Ares.

Lucifer sat on the end with Desmond and Azazel, no doubt talking strategy. Desmond took a deep inhale as he passed Diana and gave her a warm smile, the type he used to give her before his abduction. I had no clue what was going on between them, but Az said this morning he saw Desmond leave her room. Diana tried to get away from me and sit near him, but I pulled her back so she sat right next to her least favorite boyfriend. Me. I cast a silencing bubble around us so I could chaff her in semi-privacy.

“Are you miffed about earlier? Sucks to have your own words thrown back at you,” I teased her. “Your least favorite boyfriend has such a bad attitude, right? Thank the gods I give you good head though…”

“You’re about to not be my anything,” she snapped at me as she removed my hand from her thigh.

“Oh, come on, don’t be that way,” I laughed. “You could say I was an absolute prick, a complete wanker, and you’d still be mine. I was just giving you a physical reminder of that very true fact earlier… You really brought that orgasm denial earlier on yourself.”

If looks could kill, and I wasn’t immortal, I’d have my own private pit in Hell. Thank Lucifer, she didn’t have that power. Yet. It was only a matter of time with how talented she was.

“Would you still be obsessed with me and insist I’m yours if I stabbed you?” she threatened, glaring up at me from her seat. Her clenched jaw and red cheeks should have been off putting, but it was downright cute.

I was eighty-five percent sure that threats and simmering tension were our foreplay. So was stalking, at least for me.

“I didn’t think it would be possible to be even more obsessed with you than I am now, but your beautiful mind found out how to make it happen, Birdie. The way to an incubus’ heart is always knife play.” I pinched her cheek, then handed her a bag of popcorn from a walking vendor for the show.

“They have popcorn at gladiator fights?” she asked in a bewildered voice. She knew nothing about this.

Of course, when would Diana have witnessed such a spectacle before? I saw Ares fight in his ancient style a few times throughout the centuries, and gruesome wasn’t the word to describe it.
